Of the 393 deaths involving COVID-19 in Week 52, 71.0% (279 deaths) had this recorded as the underlying cause of death, which was a marginally lower proportion when compared with Week 51 (71.8%). This is a decrease in all deaths compared with the week ending 23 December 2022 (Week 51), when the number of all-cause deaths registered was 14,530 COVID-19 accounted for 429 of these deaths (3.0%). In the week ending 30 December 2022 (Week 52), 9,517 deaths were registered in England and Wales 393 of these deaths mentioned "novel coronavirus (COVID-19)", accounting for 4.1% of all deaths. The number of deaths registered in England and Wales was affected by the Christmas and Boxing Day bank holidays more information on the effect of bank holidays can be found in Section 5: Measuring the data. ![]()
